Our clinic offers short-term externships to fourth- and fifth-year veterinary students who are interested in furthering their education and experience in exotic animal medicine. We accept veterinary students from veterinary schools domestically and internationally.

Throughout the academic year, veterinary students can participate in either a one- or two-week externship at our clinic. Extended externships beyond 2 weeks may be available on a limited basis and can be arranged on a case-by-case basis.

Please note that we do not offer board or transportation accommodations.  Students are responsible for arranging these on their own.

What to Expect

Invaluable exposure to exotic veterinary medicine is what you can expect while doing an externship with us as we are the only 100% exotics clinic serving the GTA and beyond.

In addition to working during our regular weekday clinic hours, our externs are expected to participate in morning rounds and assist our technicians with daily early morning and evening treatments. Our externs also have the option of participating in our after-hours emergency service, the hours of which are subject to vary.

You will be able to observe our veterinarians in scheduled appointments, emergency cases and surgeries. Hands-on experience is based on an individual extern’s skill set. We will make every effort in getting students involved, but as we are a primary private practice and not a teaching facility, hands-on opportunities in all situations is not guaranteed.  Where appropriate, you may be asked to administer some medications under the direct supervision and guidance of one of our veterinarians or veterinary technicians.

Additional hospital responsibilities may include, but may not be limited to: restraining our exotic patients for procedures and running blood work (CBC, chemistry, etc.).
