It would be fair to say that our Dr. Evan Mavromatis and our veterinary technician Dahlia had a scent-sational Sunday at our clinic.
Two baby skunks, named Smella and Stinkerbell, came to our clinic to be de-scented yesterday. This delicate surgery involves the careful removal of the skunks’ small scent glands. We are pleased to report that both surgeries were successful and that Smella and Stinkerbell are both recovering well. (Story continues below.)
Smella and Stinkerbell came to us from the Soper Creek Wildlife Rescue, which is located in Bowmanville, Ontario. They were born at the rescue and will remain there as permanent residents and animal ambassadors, which is the reason why they needed to be de-scented. They are unable to be released as they lack the skills to survive on their own in the wild.
We want to emphasize that Smella and Stinkerbell are not pets and it is illegal for people to keep wild animals as pets! Soper Creek has a license from Ontario’s Ministry of Natural Resources to keep these animals in captivity at the rescue.
