The Ontario government has announced that all non-essential businesses must close by 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday March 24, 2020. According to Ontario’s Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act, veterinary clinics are not considered to be an essential service. The Ministry of the Solicitor General is responsible for the administration of this Act. The Ontario Veterinary Medical Association has been working with the Ministry of the Solicitor General and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs regarding veterinary medicine and emergency management planning. It is unclear at this time how veterinary clinics will be affected, including ours. Ontario Premier Doug Ford says he will release a list of businesses deemed essential and non-essential tomorrow (March 24th). We will update you as soon as we have more information. If you would like to express your concern to the Ontario government regarding the possible closure of the province’s veterinary clinics, please contact Ontario Solicitor General Sylvia Jones at [email protected].
